Psalm 1

Psa. 1:1 Blessed is the man
Who walks not in the counsel of the ungodly,
Nor stands in the path of sinners,
Nor sits in the seat of the scornful;

When ever you see a series of three, pay attention.  It is the number of steps to the Lord.  It deals with the outer court, holy place and most holy place. Here we see this progression.  Blessed is the man it says.  Satan has a kingdom as well.  He tries to mimic the Lord’s.  The seat of the scornful is his place.  The mercy seat is our Lord’s.

We are told here not to walk in the counsel of the ungodly.  Too many people ask the wrong people for advice.  They do not know where the source of their counsel is coming from.  I heard a great statement once.  It was from Mary Webb, “bitterness masquerades as wisdom.”  That is very profound.

You also need to stay out of the pathway of sinners.  There is a pathway for the people of God and it is not on the same road as sinners.

Matt. 7:13 “Enter by the narrow gate; for wide is the gate and broad is the way that leads to destruction, and there are many who go in by it.

We are to go by the way (pathway) of the Lord.  It is called the Highway of Holiness.  See Isa 35:8

Also, our seat of rest is the Mercy Seat with the Lord.  It is not with the scornful.  There are those who mock the things of God and the kingdom way.  This is not just a believer having a bad day but someone who is bent the wrong way.  It would be really hard for a believer not to recognize someone in this condition.

Psa. 1:2 But his delight is in the law of the LORD,
And in His law he meditates day and night.

Here is the delight for the believer, to delight in the laws of God.  Many people have forsaken law as if God is lawless.  However, scripture says the law is done away with for righteousness sake, not good living.  Understanding the laws of the Lord is to understand His kingdom and it’s ways.  Meditation is a major key to the ways of the kingdom.  It is not new age but kingdom ways.  Mediation is not wrong if you meditate on the Lord.  It can help you to see things in the Lord that otherwise you would miss.

Psa. 1:3 He shall be like a tree
Planted by the rivers of water,
That brings forth its fruit in its season,
Whose leaf also shall not wither;
And whatever he does shall prosper.

The person who delights in him is he who is like a tree planted by the waters; never going thirsty and always bringing forth fruit. No matter what storm or climate they encounter they do not wither nor faint.  Everything they set their hand to do prospers.  That sounds like it might be important.

Psa. 1:4 The ungodly are not so,
But are like the chaff which the wind drives away.

Again the opposite is compared here, the ungodly are driven by every wind.  They have no weight in them nor fruit.  Chaff is the stuff you throw away because it has no value.  It is the fruit the Lord wants.  The wheat falls to the ground but the chaff flies away.  Scripture talks about not being tossed about by every wind of doctrine; that is the chaff.

Psa. 1:5 Therefore the ungodly shall not stand in the judgment,
Nor sinners in the congregation of the righteous.

Again, the Lord makes a absolute statement here; the ungodly shall not stand in the judgment;  nor the sinners in the congregation.  There is no room for a maybe here.  It is no surprise that this is the first Psalm to me.  It is one that sets the stage for the others.  What you need to know is this was a prayer that was sung in the Tabernacle of David.

Psa. 1:6 For the LORD knows the way of the righteous,
But the way of the ungodly shall perish.

When you serve the Lord and His ways, you get the attention of the King.  He knows the way of the righteous for He himself has walked the road.  Jesus came and showed us the way of the kingdom and how to be in the will of the Father.  As for the ungodly, there is only one conclusion;  their way shall perish.  It is not a maybe, it will happen.
